Sushila Purohit's story

~Patient's grandson and patient themselves speaking

What is your name?
My name is Harshit Bhardwaj.

What is your relation to the patient?
She is my maternal grandmother, and she has breast cancer in the second stage.

When was it diagnosed?
We found out a short while ago through a report. It wasn't detected too late, so now she is undergoing her fourth chemotherapy session.

Is it only chemotherapy being given, or is there any other treatment as well?
No, currently only chemotherapy is being given. It will weaken the body's cells, and then if any further treatment is needed, we’ll consult the doctor.

Are you getting the treatment done at this hospital only, or elsewhere too?
For now, we are getting the treatment done only here.

Are you paying for the treatment yourself, or is it covered by the government?
The expenses are covered under the Chiranjeevi scheme, but we also contribute a little ourselves.

How did you come to know about the cancer?
[Now the patient is speaking] I felt a slight lump here, so I got it checked. They said it could be due to thyroid issues and would resolve on its own. Then I also got it checked at MB Hospital in 2019. At that time, there was a lump in my arm as well. Later, I had surgeries at Ahmedabad and Rajasthan Hospital. After that, everything was going well; I didn’t even have to take chemo — just two 500mg capsules a day.

But this year, it was detected again. We were getting sonographies done every three months, but nothing showed up. Then we did an X-ray, and three months ago we found out the cancer had returned.

Have you undergone surgery again now?
No, right now only chemotherapy is going on.

How did you feel when you found out the cancer had returned?
It was stressful because we were getting screenings done every three months, and still the cancer came back.

Are you also doing any Ayurvedic or home-based treatment?
Yes, I am also taking Ayurveda.

Would you like to give any advice to people who have just been diagnosed with cancer?
Every individual responds differently to treatment… The doctor advised me to try Ayurveda as well, so I explored that too. Now everything seems fine.

We want to use personal experience and gathered knowledge about cancer to build a platform that help others.
